I don't know whether to express profound gratitude for the thoroughness of this piece, or to flee somewhere (although there is no place to go) to escape the ubiquitous maliciousness, greed, and cynicism it reveals. After pondering that dilemma a bit, I now conclude it is preferable to suffer the ugly truth than indulge in the faux anodyne of trying to ignore it.

One quibble, the Nazis derived their heinousness from the eugenics movement which began in England in the late 19th century and then started gaining popularity in the United State in the early 20th century, not the other way around.

As the old saying goes, sometimes the truth hurts. But I appreciate your sentiment. As for the eugenics movement, this was not the focus of the article. But it would be fair to say that the Nazi's took quite a lot from the legacy of the British Empire.

The truth indeed sometimes hurts, but also sets us free, as another old saying goes. It is inherent in learning, and thus the path to knowledge. I came across this quotation from Aeschylus: “He who learns must suffer. And even in our sleep pain, which cannot forget, falls drop by drop upon the heart, until, in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom through the awful grace of God.”

For certain I understand that the eugenics movement wasn't the focus of article, I just wanted to provide a minor correction, for as you point out it was a manifestation of the British, and the American, Empires.

Again, thanks for all your hard work behind an exceptional piece.

This is a wonderful article that should be required reading around the world. Thank you for linking to it. The problem is that healthcare is not considered a right, and should be. The US and the UK don't seem to understand that happy, healthy people are productive, creative people. The powers that be are soulless money grubbers who miss the point of life. Somehow we have to change the culture so that everyone gets it, but I don't know how. Certainly your post does help, though.
